Çiğdem K̂ağıtçıbaş has long been at the forefront of research in developmental and cultural psychology, and is one of the world's most highly respected cross-cultural psychologists. This collection of essays has been produced in honor of Professor K̂ağıtçıbaş's retirement and to commemorate her contribution to the field. The volume examines social, developmental, and cultural psychology and intervention policies. A select group of international expert scholars explore those aspects of human behavior that are observed in all cultures, as well as those that are unique to each. They also examine changes in the family across socio-cultural contexts and generations in order to understand the factors precipitating these changes. Etnocentrisme, racisme, xenofobie zijn termen die regelmatig opduiken, doorgaans op die momenten waar niet de houding zelf maar bepaalde van haar afgeleide gedragingen (zoals discriminatie, extreem rechts stemgedrag, etnische spanningen ...) de samenleving opschrikken. Dan wordt al snel geschermd met verschillende verklaringen voor die houdingen en dat gedrag. Deze stemmen soms overeen met wat wetenschappelijk onderzoek vindt, vaak ook niet.In de duiding van etnocentrisme staan verschillende wetenschappelijke verklaringswijzen bovendien naast elkaar, zelfs niet echt als concurrerende verklaringen, maar letterlijk naast elkaar als buren die elkaar negeren. Wie de literatuur over etnocentrisme overloopt, stelt vast dat de oorsprong van die houding in drie soorten werkelijkheden worden gezocht: de natuur, de persoonlijkheid en de sociale omstandigheden. In het onderzoek waarover Vreemden rapporteert, ligt de nadruk vooral op de sociale omstandigheden.Veel onderzoek naar die omstandigheden heeft overwegend of zelfs uitsluitend aandacht gehad voor de materiële condities waarin mensen leven. Die blijken echter niet (meer) zo belangrijk voor de verklaring van etnisch vooroordeel. Daarom worden in dit boek de culturele verklaringen centraal geplaatst. Dat zijn de verschillende factoren die een invloed hebben op de wijze waarop mensen denken en voelen. Uit het gerapporteerde onderzoek blijkt dat etnocentrisme wordt beïnvloed door het gezin waarin men opgroeit, de school die men bezoekt, de zenders die men bekijkt. De rol van gezin, onderwijs en media krijgt bijzondere aandacht. Bovenal verschijnt etnocentrisme hier echter als een houding waarmee mensen zin geven aan de situatie waarin ze geplaatst zijn, zich positioneren ten opzichte van anderen, strevend naar zelfrespect en zoeken naar een verantwoording van hun gevoelens

".. De lectuur van Scrutons boek ('Waarom cultuur belangrijk is') heeft ons naar enkele zijpaden gelokt, maar heeft geen antwoord geboden op onze twijfels omtrent het belang van de hoge cultuur. Meer zelfs, we zijn er meer dan ooit van overtuigd dat in de massacultuur alles, en nog meer, te vinden is wat in kunst en cultuur zou te vinden zijn. Dat is het eerste grote thema van dit boek. Het tweede thema betreft de overheidssubsidiëring van kunst en cultuur. Die subsidiëring wordt net gelegitimeerd door het grote maatschappelijk belang dat men hecht aan kunst en cultuur. Als de commerciële cultuur alles te bieden heeft wat de grote kunst pretendeert te bieden, hoe kan dan nog verantwoord worden dat de overheid de laatste financieel ondersteunt, met het geld van de belastingbetaler? En wie beslist over wie gesubsidieerd wordt? Geregeld duiken geruchten op over belangenvermenging in het subsidiemilieu. Wij hebben het netwerk van het subsidiemilieu blootgelegd en zijn tot verrassende vaststellingen gekomen. Als voor het subsidienetwerk de term corrupt misschien overladen is, dan lijkt de term incestueus evenwel niet overdreven."
